The process the leads to the design and implementation of an Internal Sustainability Management System ISMS is designed according to an integral approach to change management in the complex field of opposing forces that emerges with any change initiative in an organization. Some of the opposing forces that will be attended to with this approach are:
- Manage with equal care the forces for change, those for continuity and the resistance.
- Combining a top-down with a bottom-up approach.
- Attending equally the needs of a project organization as those of the departments.
- Integrating the multiple and sometimes conflicting perspectives and goals of different departments and specialties within the company.
In order to successfully manage change in this complex field, it is necessary to engage in each step the people and functions that need to contribute to the adequate completion of the task of each meeting. This is best done with a structured methodology that allows, step by step:
- The emergence of the different forces and perspectives on the task at hand.
- The divergence into different proposals, valuing the risks and advantages of each one.
- The prioritization of the proposals.
- The convergence in a shared set of proposals.
- The elaboration of an action plan
- The alignment of multiple perspectives, functions and people in coordinated action towards the desired change.
The foremost advantage of this approach is that it maximizes the buy-in from the beginning and minimizes the resistances in the implementation phase, because:
- The people that will implement the change are involved all the way from the preliminary stages until the action planning.
- The views of those that, to more or less extent, may oppose the change, are taken into account as loyal supporters: they usually voice the risks of the chosen path.
